English As An Additional Language

When your child starts at Monks Abbey Primary School, we make sure they feel welcome, safe and well supported from the very beginning. As part of this, we use the Bell Foundation approach, which helps schools understand how children learn English as an Additional Language and ensures they receive the right support to succeed. We will carry out an initial assessment, including checking your child’s foundational knowledge in phonics, writing and maths. Your child will also be supported by a Language Buddy, usually an older child who speaks the same language. We are always happy to translate any information, our termly newsletters will have key curriculum words translated into multiple languages.
